Eskom has submitted an application to the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) to increase electricity tariffs to 16% for the next five years. The increase includes 3% for the entry of new power producers.
Eskom CEO Brian Dames says the power utility needs the tariff increases to recover the cost of producing electricity and for its expansion programs. Eskom says it also needs to service its R180 billion debt.
